The Tailor on Brunswick property brochure

Title: The Tailor on Brunswick property brochure
Agency: ERD
Stocks: Keaykolour and Knight Smooth
Printing specs: Digitally printed
Printed by: Bambra Press VIC

This story is about a property developer, textiles factory and astute design studio. ERD recently designed the property publication ‘The Tailor on Brunswick’, for a boutique development located in funky East Brunswick in Melbourne. To make it happen, they had to convince developer Gutch & Co to do it after their real estate agent said it wasn’t necessary. Boo!! ERD knew: “The printed piece would reflect the style and attention to detail that defined the development.” We concur.

The brochure features singer sewn (black thread) binding that cleverly ties in with the building’s historical roots (in its original life it was a textile factory). The publication is 28pp with a 4pp cover, printed on Keaykolour Sombre Grey 300gsm for the cover and Knight Smooth 160gsm for the text. The beautiful stock choices were made all the more special with photography by Joe Vittorio and Mattia Scarfo and digital rendering by Andrew Clarkson.

M is for monograph, James Money’s, by Studio Constantine

Title: James Money Monograph Agency: Studio Constantine (VIC) Client: James Money, Artist Stocks: Kaskad Sparrow Grey, Grange Offset, HannoArt Satin Printing specs: Offset printed, Pantone 871 and duotone Printed by: Adams Print (VIC) So many songs and puns we’d like to share about ‘money’ right now but alas, it’s not the point of this post. We refer here to James Money, an accomplished Australian artist and Archibald finalist. To launch into the Hong Kong art market during Art Basel/HK 2014, he collaborated with Studio Constantine to create a limited edition monograph of his work. The outcome is this simple and elegant A5 piece printed on Kaskad Sparrow Grey, Grange Offset and HannoArt Satin. Constantine_1 Constantine_2 Money (we just have to keep using his surname, it’s so great!) is an award winning artist. He works in both portraiture and landscape, exploring themes of isolation. His work appears in private collections around Australia and New York. Studio Constantine worked on all the stages – planning, documenting, editing and production. As David Constantine explains, they were keen to: “Use a format that led readers through the work and articulated the different genres. The layout and typography was deliberately restrained, although quietly assertive in scale.” Constantine_3 Constantine_4 So we now have this little A5 beauty to feast our eyes on. A double-spined, concertina fold cover printed with Pantone 871 on the Kaskad with two different text paper stocks – a coated sheet for the painted work (HannoArt Satin) and an uncoated sheet (Grange Offset) with a custom duotone for James’ pen and ink drawings. Dee-lightful. Documentary images by SC & Flore Diamant. Constantine_5

Daniel Emma BIG! exhibition

Title: Daniel Emma BIG! exhibition
Stocks: Expression Super Smooth / Kaskad

Adelaide based design duo Daniel Emma (Emma Aiston and Daniel To) recently launched their striking new range of design pieces. Think furniture, light fittings and table top paraphernalia, in a ‘still life’ themed exhibition called BIG! at Jacky Winter’s Lamington Drive in Melbourne. We went along and we liked it A LOT.

Daniel-Emma_5

Lamington Drive ran two workshops inspired by the exhibit. The first encouraged visitors, both adults and kids, to illustrate Daniel and Emma’s still life scenes using a mix of our uncoated stocks including some crazy colours from the Kaskad range and then pinning their work to the gallery walls. The second workshop was a demonstration featuring the ever-so-talented Melbourne illustrators Beci Orpin and Madeleine Stamer, who created their own in-situ still life illustrations. The exhibition space is now filled with colourful wallpaper featuring the artistic endeavours of Melbourne’s young and old, what a fantastic community project!

Ask Alice 2014 charity calendar ‘Wish you were here’

Title: Wish You Were Here
Agency: Ask Alice
Stocks: Sovereign Offset Digital – Indigo
Printed by: Bambra Press (VIC)

Each year Melbourne based stationery label, Ask Alice aka Sass Cocker, releases a charity calendar to raise funds for a not-for-profit organisation. ‘Wish You Were Here’ is the 2014 calendar, featuring a hand-picked selection of artists from all over the world, sharing their favourite city.

Ask-Alice_8

The 2014 project is raising funds for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) with 100% of the proceeds going to the ASRC. This is truly a love project for Sass, who we’re proud to support in her pursuit of creativity and charity. Printed on Sovereign Offset Digital – Indigo 300gsm, this has to be our favourite calendar to-date (not that we didn’t like the others, there’s no favourite children here). The colourful print and imagery sure do make our paper look good!

To celebrate, a calendar launch was held in Melbourne last week with an exhibition of limited edition artworks. You can see the exhibition with your own peepers up until 22 December, click here: https://www.facebook.com/events/543445615742336/

Mabe Hair collateral

Title: Mabe Hair collateral
Agency: Band (SA)
Client: Mabe Hair (SA)
Stocks: Rives Design
Printed by: Terry Howe Printing (SA) and finishing by Hunter Brothers (SA)

Mabe Hair is not just any hairdresser in Adelaide. With a collective 20+ years of experience, safe to say this is a very special salon. Rightly so, they deserved an identity that reflects this. Introducing Band – a brand, communication and digital agency led by George Randle and Chris Cooper. It was those gold foiled scissors that first caught our attention. Nothing like a bit of foil to make us swoon!  Combined with uncoated stock Rives Design Pale Cream, it makes for very swish collateral.

Band created an identity that reflects the unique service Mabe provide as well as the history behind their craft. Hand illustrated scissors combined with bespoke typography has resulted in a clean and elegant identity. Rives Design Pale Cream 250gsm was chosen for the business cards and 120gsm for the stationery, providing an elevated feel. Printed 1 colour, the foil delivers the premium look and is a perfect balance to the creaminess of the stock.

‘No agenda, no pomp and ceremony, no clones’ states the Mabe website. Elements we think are perfectly reflected in the collateral Band has created.

McClelland Sculpture Gallery exhibition books

Title: McClelland Sculpture Gallery exhibition books Agency: David Lancashire Design Stocks: Barry Bleach Board / Grange Offset / HannoArt – Satin Printed by: Mercedes Waratah (VIC) Renowned for its outstanding collection of outdoor sculptures and innovative exhibition programs, McClleland Gallery and Sculpture Park is located within 16 hectares of bush and landscaped gardens on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. David Lancashire Design (DLD) in Melbourne have worked with the gallery since 2006 and more recently, they’ve been busy designing and art directing the exhibition catalogues and print collateral using HannoArt – Satin and Grange Offset as their chosen stocks. Sculpture_2 DLD work closely with both curators and artists when producing a full colour catalogue for each new exhibition. McClelland like to push the boundaries which allows DLD more creative freedom. They recently re-freshed the brand, creating a more dynamic, modern look across all print collateral, including brochures, event calendars and exhibition invitations. The suite of catalogues designed differ greatly, along with the subjects and styles within, but maintain an overall identity for the gallery. David Lancashire mentions: “Art direction and using a great photographer like John Gollings, as well as a good printer and choosing the right paper, all contribute to the reproduction of the artwork and a great end result.” We couldn’t agree more! DLD enjoys using HannoArt – Satin for its great printability, cost effectiveness and colour reproduction. Stephanie Mulder, Graphic Designer from DLD explains why. “We’ve found that HannoArt – Satin consistently produces great results, especially important when reproducing artwork. Another bonus is the stock’s environmental credentials, as the studio is always aware of trying to encourage the use of sustainable practice.” DLD have also introduced uncoated paper Grange Offset to contrast with the coated stock. The Sculpture Survey & Award 2012, 18 November 2012 – 14 July 2013 catalogue includes this sheet, chosen for its colour reproduction, ability to hold crisp detail, tactility and bulkiness. The identity and format for this catalogue required special treatment and stock selection to make it stand apart as the event is one of Australia’s most important outdoor sculpture exhibitions. In other words – it’s a big deal! Janet Laurence: The Alchemical Garden of Desire 18 November 2012 – 3 March 2013 and Aftermath: Landscape Photographs by John Gollings from Black Saturday 18 November 2012 – 3 March 2013 (both sewn and burst bound, with matt cello on the cover) are printed on HannoArt Satin and make up the suite of new designs. And for the exhibition invitations, the gallery now uses Barry Bleach Board 210gsm (with a gloss aqueous varnish on one side to make the colours pop and enhance the image detail) so the receiver has something more interesting to look at when the invite comes in the mail. As a whole, we really dig this new design direction. Makes for an enticing reason to drive down to Mornington. Road trip anyone? Sculpture_4 Sculpture_3  Sculpture_5 Sculpture_6 Sculpture_7

Regal Rogue – Australia’s first vermouth

Title: Regal Rogue corporate identity and branding
Agency: Squad Ink (NSW)
Client: Regal Rogue
Stocks: Envirocare 100% Recycled
Printed by: Clarke Murphy Print (NSW)

Regal Rogue is a unique Australian aromatic vermouth. Sourced with brawn and crafted with heart for all the world to savour.” Cheers to that! We love that whimsical sentence from the Regal Rogue website. You may be thinking: ‘Since when did Australia and vermouth appear in the same sentence?’. Well, they do now. A Hunter Valley style, classic cocktail mixer, exists. For real. And the wrap of the bottle is printed on our very own Envirocare 100% Recycled 70gsm.

Regal_3

Squad Ink in Sydney, run by twin brothers Terry and Matthew Squadrito are behind the identity for this innovative brand. They were brought into the mix by marketing entrepreneur and Regal Rogue founder, Mark Ward (Bureau Six), in collaboration with winemaker Lisa McGuigan and Yakusan’s Gilles Merry providing strategic brand insights.

The wrap on the bottle is really beautiful, printed 1 PMS. The quirky illustration is of a Knight in armour and an owl sporting a crown, nutty but we love it. Squad Ink wanted the packaging to lend itself to fitting in with today’s commitment to sustainability ie handmade v mass produced, small v gigantic, natural v artificial. In a world full of so many choices, it is often all about the packaging and this bottle is a stand-out in that respect.

Squad Ink further developed the rogue knight’s story by highlighting his roguish ways through a series of etiquette tips and serving suggestion cards. ‘The Etiquette of a Regal Rogue’, with clever copy from the peeps at Copy&Co (see pic on the Squad Ink website). They also called it ‘Batch No.1: ‘Fearlessley handcrafted’ which sounds superbly roguish to us!

One last thing, if you love this project and would like it to win some glory, go forth and vote for it in the Sydney Design Awards.

COMPETITION DETAILS: To enter, please send an email to communication@kwdoggett.com.au with your answer to this question:

As sunny as Maya honey

Title: Maya Sunny Honey identity and branding
Agency: Zé Studio (NSW)
Client: Maya Sunny Honey
Stocks: Doggett Labels – Precut / Envirocare 100% Recycled
Printed by: Carbon8 (NSW)

Bees produce honey but have you ever seen it done like this?? The Maya Sunny Honey (you can also visit their Facebook page) product range literally involves bees crafting the honey INSIDE the jar! Zé Studio in Sydney designed the identity and branding and used Envirocare 100% Recycled labels for the jars.

The unique and innovative 100% raw honey range is brought to you by Andrew Wyszynski. It’s such a great concept with a stylish and beautiful design to match. The upside down jars are awesome, reflecting the process taken to make the sweet nectar. For the most part, the process is a well-kept secret. But we can give you a sneak peek at how it all happens because you take the time to read our blog and we love you.

Enclosed within each individual jar is a mini beehive, with about 450-500 bees crafting an exceptional and unique honeycomb. The making of this honeycomb is an incredible system, where a set of 30 empty jars are placed upside down on top of a beehive. The bees travel from the hive into each jar creating the honeycomb from scratch with no foundation (amazing right?). Around one month later a whole jar is complete.

Joe Tarzia from Zé Studio mentions: “A sustainable and handcrafted approach was reflected in the design execution – matching the natural process of production from beehive to jar as well as the pure nature of the honey itself. Understanding Andrew’s delicate and precise process was the most honest approach in handling all aspects of packaging, from material selection through to hand application methods.”

A locally sourced vine wire was selected to hand seal the neck of each jar as well as the Envirocare 100% Recycled labels, printed using an HP Indigo press and pre-cut for hand application. Andrew believes that: “Honey should be enjoyed in its most pure form, allowing full benefit of its nutritional properties.” This innovative design does the trick by complementing the process of production from beehive to jar and looking great at the same time. Yum on both counts!

Some sweet stationery by Emma Kate Creative

Title: he{art}full stationery
Agency: Emma Kate Creative
Stocks: Conqueror Laid Digital
Printed by: Kwik Kopy (SA)

The collection of 36 handwritten messages are full of ‘wild romance, candid emotion, creative abandon and happy wanderers’ (we poached that line from her website – it sounds so dreamy, we just had to!). Whimsical watercolours from Italy of apricot, olive, strawberry and periwinkle have been used to paint the cards that are each presented with a pattern-lined envelope in coordinating hues. There are gift tags available too, tied with natural jute string.

EmmaKate_1

Emma Kate Codrington is a passionate freelance designer based in South Australia with a love for polka dots and anything French. Her inspiration comes from the thrill of her adventures while living abroad. “Basing myself in Montpellier in the South of France for six months and travelling through Europe, I freelanced for my lovely clients from the cobbled streets of Stockholm, cafés in Florence and underneath the Eiffel Tower.” We’re not jealous much at all. Emma sent packages and love letters to friends and family back home, so to capture all of the emotion she developed her messages into a product line – and that’s where Emma Kate Paperie was born.

A confessed tree hugger, Emma uses uncoated and environmentally responsible paper for all of her print work: “The texture and tactility of Conqueror Laid attracted me first and when I heard the stock was made carbon neutral, my mind was made up!” The greeting cards and gift tags are printed digitally on an HP Indigo 5000 on Conqueror Laid Digital Brilliant White 300gsm and 120gsm for the envelopes.

This beautiful and unique collection is available online, so if you’re curious to see more, visit Emma Kate Creative’s website.
